Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta lead call to protect open-weight AI

Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Palantir and more than 20 other technology companies published an open letter on July 24 urging U.S. policymakers not to impose premature restrictions on open-weight AI models, arguing that models whose weights can be downloaded, inspected and run privately are essential to American technological leadership. Other signatories included IBM, Hugging Face, Mistral, Mozilla, Perplexity, Andreessen Horowitz and Y Combinator, while closed-model developers OpenAI, Anthropic and Google did not sign. The coalition, whose letter was amplified by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, formed amid rising scrutiny of Chinese AI labs after Moonshot AI released its powerful open-weight Kimi K3 model.
