BYD nears decision on second European plant, eyes Spain and France

BYD is close to choosing a site for a second European passenger-vehicle plant, with Spain and France the leading candidates for a brownfield acquisition, the automaker's European special adviser Alfredo Altavilla said at a Reuters conference in Frankfurt on July 1. Altavilla said two teams were scouting jurisdictions and that the call 'needs to be made very soon.' A second European site would follow BYD's Szeged plant in Hungary - where mass production is now expected in Q4 2026 - and help satisfy 'Made in EU' requirements amid tariff pressure on Chinese-built cars.
