Waymo recalls 3,871 robotaxis over freeway construction zones
Waymo issued a voluntary recall covering 3,871 vehicles, disclosed through NHTSA on June 18, after a software flaw let its fifth-generation robotaxis enter closed freeway construction zones and keep traveling at posted speeds. The recall followed 13 incidents in Phoenix and the San Francisco Bay Area - including seven San Francisco cars on May 18 - prompting Waymo to pull its fleet from all highways on May 19 while it develops a fix. It is a distinct action from the company's May flooded-roads recall and adds to a string of federal probes into Waymo's safety record.
