The company that landed on the Moon
Most space startups are defined by what they hope to do. Firefly Aerospace is defined by something it has already done: in March 2025 its Blue Ghost lander set down intact in Mare Crisium and ran more than 14 days of surface operations, the first fully successful commercial Moon landing in history. That single accomplishment separates Firefly from a crowded field of well-funded companies still trying to prove they can reach the lunar surface at all, and it reframes the company as an end-to-end space-and-defense contractor rather than another small-launch hopeful.
The thesis is breadth anchored by proof. Firefly is one of very few companies that builds its own orbital rocket (Alpha), its own lunar lander (Blue Ghost), its own in-space transfer vehicle (Elytra), and — through its SciTec subsidiary — national-security mission software, all under one roof and now inside a public company. The risk is the mirror image of the opportunity: Firefly is attempting to industrialize four hard businesses at once on a small revenue base, and each of them still burns cash. The next two years are about turning a landmark demonstration into a repeatable, profitable production line.
From a twice-rebuilt startup to the Nasdaq
Firefly's history is one of near-death and reinvention. Tom Markusic founded Firefly Space Systems in 2014; the original company ran out of money and its assets were acquired by Noosphere Ventures, which relaunched it as Firefly Aerospace in 2017. The rebuilt company's breakthrough came in 2022, when the Alpha rocket reached orbit on its second flight, putting Firefly into the roughly one-tonne launch class and giving it a flight-proven vehicle to sell.
The turning point was 2025. Within a single year Firefly completed its historic Blue Ghost Moon landing, priced an upsized IPO to begin trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker FLY, and closed its acquisition of SciTec to bolt a national-security software business onto its hardware. Leadership had already shifted from founder to operator: former Boeing and Maxar executive Jason Kim took over as CEO, signaling a move from scrappy engineering shop toward a disciplined, contract-driven prime. The public listing gave Firefly the balance sheet to industrialize everything it had spent a decade prototyping.
Alpha and the responsive-launch franchise
Alpha is Firefly's operational core: a two-stage, carbon-composite small-lift rocket that lifts about 1,030 kg to low Earth orbit for dedicated commercial, civil, and national-security payloads. Its differentiator is not size but responsiveness. Firefly has flown a U.S. Space Force mission on 24-hour notice, a capability the Pentagon increasingly values as it plans for rapid, tactically responsive space operations — and one that commands premium, government-anchored pricing.
After a mid-mission failure, Alpha returned to flight in March 2026 on Flight 7, which deployed a Lockheed Martin demo payload and validated avionics and thermal upgrades. The next step is the full Alpha Block II configuration on Flight 8, targeted for late summer 2026, with an extended fuselage, in-house consolidated avionics, upgraded thermal protection, and stronger composite structures — changes meant to raise both performance and production rate. Firefly has said demand for Alpha, particularly from national-security customers, is strong enough that additional Block II vehicles are already heading into assembly.
Blue Ghost, Elytra, and the cislunar business
Blue Ghost is the asset that makes Firefly unique, and the company is now trying to turn a one-off triumph into a franchise. NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program is the anchor customer: in June 2026 NASA awarded Firefly a $144M task order for an accelerated Blue Ghost mission — its sixth contracted lunar mission — that Firefly says it can build and deliver in roughly two years, about half the time of Mission 1, by leaning on its proven build-to-print lander design. The goal Firefly markets is a shift from one Moon landing per year to several. Blue Ghost Mission 2, a more ambitious far-side landing paired with the Elytra Dark transfer vehicle carrying ESA's Lunar Pathfinder, is stacked for a launch no earlier than late 2026.
Elytra extends the same lander technology into a family of in-space vehicles for orbital maneuvering, payload delivery, communications, space-domain awareness, and lunar imaging (the Ocula service). Its most striking win is a $75M NASA JPL subcontract for the MoonFall mission, in which Elytra will ferry four drones through cislunar space and deploy them above the lunar south pole to survey permanently shadowed regions for NASA's Moon Base initiative. To industrialize all of this, Firefly doubled its Cedar Park, Texas campus to 144,000 sq ft in May 2026, adding a cleanroom four times larger than before and a new 'Gloworks' innovation lab — templating Blue Ghost and Elytra into a production line rather than a bespoke build.
Eclipse, Northrop, and the defense pivot
Firefly's two biggest growth bets both lean on partners with deep pockets. Eclipse is a reusable medium-lift rocket designed to carry about 16,300 kg to LEO, co-developed with Northrop Grumman — which invested $50M and brings space-station resupply and national-security demand. Major flight articles are in build and test and Firefly is progressing through first-stage tank testing, but the debut has slipped to no earlier than 2027. Eclipse is the vehicle that would move Firefly from a niche small-launch provider into the medium-lift class where mega-constellations and heavier government payloads live.
The SciTec acquisition pushed Firefly squarely into missile defense. In May 2026 SciTec received a U.S. Space Force Other Transaction Authority agreement under the Space-Based Interceptor program — part of a roughly $3.2B, 12-company effort to build the 'Golden Dome' space-based missile-defense layer by 2028 — and in June it won a $5.5M option to deliver the operational data-fusion system for the Air Force's Cloud-Based Command and Control program supporting NORAD and homeland defense. Together with the June 2026 acquisition of AI vision-navigation firm Space-ng (whose software helped Blue Ghost autonomously dodge hazardous terrain on final descent), these moves position Firefly as a software-and-autonomy contractor as much as a hardware manufacturer, diversifying revenue well beyond launch.
The financial picture
Firefly entered 2026 with the balance sheet of a newly public company and the income statement of a scaling one. Q1 2026 revenue was $80.9M, and management has guided to $420M–$450M for the full year against a backlog of roughly $1.3B as of March 31, 2026 — a backlog-to-revenue ratio that reflects how much of Firefly's value is contracted future work across launch, lunar, and defense programs. The 2025 IPO delivered about $933M in net proceeds, on top of more than $589M raised privately between 2014 and 2024 and Northrop's $50M strategic investment.
The company has kept raising and borrowing to fund its build-out. It closed a follow-on offering of new and secondary shares at $48.00 in June 2026 for general corporate purposes, and per June 2026 Reuters reporting the U.S. Export-Import Bank is set to authorize a roughly $110M loan — a 10-year facility expected to create about 200 jobs — to expand Firefly's Texas spacecraft production. Like most of its peers, Firefly is not yet profitable; the investment case rests on whether the backlog converts into deliveries fast enough to outrun the cash it is spending to scale.
What to watch next
The near-term signposts are concrete and closely spaced. First is the Alpha Block II debut on Flight 8 in late summer 2026 — a clean flight would validate the upgraded vehicle and the higher production cadence Firefly is banking on. Second is Blue Ghost Mission 2, a far-side landing with Elytra Dark targeted for no earlier than late 2026; success would prove Mission 1 was repeatable and de-risk the multi-mission-per-year lunar model. Third is Eclipse's first flight, now slipped to 2027, which determines whether Firefly can graduate into medium-lift.
Beyond those, Firefly is quietly widening its aperture. It is building orbital launch infrastructure at Sweden's Esrange Space Center for European Alpha launches from 2028, and in July 2026 it won its first Mars program — a $13M NASA JPL subcontract, the first award out of the new Gloworks lab, to build the aeroshell for the SkyFall Mars-helicopter mission, pushing Firefly into planetary entry-descent-and-landing hardware. The bull case is a diversified space-and-defense prime with a genuine moat in commercial lunar delivery. The bear case is that four capital-hungry businesses and a still-unprofitable P&L prove too much to industrialize at once. Execution on Alpha, Blue Ghost, and Eclipse over the next 18 months will decide which story wins.
